5 common signs of vaginal infections
The last time, I discussed getting familiar with your vulva. Today, you will get to know about the common signs of vaginal infections. These signs I am going to be listing are present regardless of the type of infection: fungi, bacterial or viral.
1. Vaginal itching: Biologically, itching is nature's way of informing us of the presence of a foreign substance on the body. Although, there can be brief episodes of itching every now and then. However, a vaginal itching that is persistent and accompanied by vaginal swelling or foul smelling discharge is a sign of infection.
2. Vulva Swelling: This is a common symptom of inflammation of the vagina and/or vulva that may sometime occur after episodes of vaginal itching and scratching. Many times, the vulva appears reddish in colour.
3. Changes in the colour and consistency of vaginal discharge: You see why I mentioned getting familiar with your body? If you do not know what is normal for you, how would you know what is not?
4. Vaginal odour: This also emphasizes the reason why you have to get familiar with your body. The vaginal has it distinct smell which is influenced by what you eat. Vaginal odour that may signal the presence of an infection are: any strong unpleasant odour, unfamiliar smell or fishy smell that is accompanied by burning and itching.
5. Painful sex: Sex is meant to be enjoyed and not endured. If you have had previous pain free sexual intercourse, a sudden onset of painful sex should alert you that you might have contacted an infection.
